Binary Opposition
Binary oppositions were advocated by Strauss. He stated that they were constructed as complete contrasts within narrative text. Binary opposites can be many different things, such as villains vs.heroes, primitive vs. modern and rural vs. urban. The use of binary opposites create secondary meaning for audiences. For example, Harry Potter vs. Voldemort, hero vs. villain, good vs. bad, liked vs. disliked.
