Chiaroscuro lighting is the high contrast between high-key and low-key lighting. This can enhance the effects of clouds, smoke, silhouettes and bodily structures. It can be seen used in a lot of film noir movies, as seen below from the film The Big Combo (Joseph H. Lewis, 1955)
