The South Korean new wave is dated from 1998 to 2005. In 1998, a generation of new, young directors began to make dynamic, genre-bending films addressing issues surrounding South Korean life. The directors tended to mix traditional film making techniques with new, foreign techniques. At the end of the new wave in 2005, it has been considered that South Korean cinema had become to 'mainstream' and westernised, due to the US influence in the country.
Influences 1988 This year makes the end of the censorship, as when under military rule, scripts were tightly censored. This meant that directors no longer had to submit scripts to the government for review.

The Korean peninsula had been divided by Western powers of North Korea and South Korea. 1950 Backed by the USSR and China, North Korea invaded South Korea, who were backed by the west. This caused cold war between the North and the South. The Korean war broke out and at the end (1953), over 2.5 million people were killed. |
